Coconut butter is a great alternative to dairy or nut butter and is high in fiber and healthy fats. You can use it for a number of recipes or eat it by the spoonful - I won’t judge! This homemade coconut butter recipe is delicious, nutritious, and could easily be mistaken for a dessert.
Ingredients
14 oz unsweetened shredded coconut
1 tablespoon coconut oil (optional)
Step By Step Instructions
Step 1: Add the shredded coconut into a food processor. Add the lid and turn the processor to high.
Step 2: Run the processor until the coconut breaks down into a powder. Continue running the processor, scraping down the sides as necessary, until the coconut forms a liquid. It will start off as gritty, but the longer you run the food processor, the smoother it will become.
Step 3: If your coconut butter isn’t breaking down, add 1 tablespoon of coconut oil for a bit of moisture. Only use this if necessary.
Step 4: Store in an airtight container and use as desired. Enjoy!
Expert Tips
- A smaller food processor works best to smooth out the coconut butter. I began my coconut butter in a large bowl of a food processor. Once the coconut had broken down quite a bit and could fit in a smaller processor, I changed the bowls and finished the coconut butter in the smaller food processor.
- Coconut butter can be tricky to smooth out, and a lot of it depends on if you have an efficient enough food processor. A blender is much harder to get a good final result. Depending on the strength of your food processor, this process can take anywhere from 3-20 minutes.
- The coconut butter will be runny after its time in the food processor, but if you store it at room temperature, it will eventually harden.
How To Store Coconut Butter
Coconut butter does not need to be stored in the fridge! Store your coconut butter in an airtight container or jar at room temperature. Your coconut butter may harden up a little bit depending on the temperature of your house. If it does harden, soften it in your microwave.
How To Use Coconut Butter
You can use coconut butter the same way you’d use any other nut butter. You can spread it on crackers, bread, use it as a dip for your favorite fruits, add it into your smoothie, or eat it straight out of the jar.
What Is The Difference Between Coconut Butter and Coconut Oil?
Most people are familiar with coconut oil and keep it on hand for a number of things, however coconut butter is not as commonly known. Coconut oil is made entirely of saturated fat where coconut butter is made from the meat of the coconut - so there’s still fat in the butter but there are other nutrients as well. Coconut oil turns to liquid when it’s warmed whereas coconut butter thins out when its warm but doesn’t get runny.
