Calling all gluten-free eaters! This homemade chickpea flour recipe is perfect for making and using in all your favorite recipes. And as we all know, if I can skip a store-bought product and make it at home, I will be doing that.

    What Is Chickpea Flour?

Chickpea flour (also commonly known as garbanzo bean flour) is flour made from ground-up chickpeas. This alternative to all-purpose flour or wheat flour skips the highly processed compounds found in store-bought chickpea flour and is a great source of fiber and protein. Homemade chickpea flour is a STAPLE for a gluten-free diet.

    Ingredients Needed

    bowl of chickpeas

    1 lb Dried Chickpeas/Garbanzo Beans

    Step By Step Instructions

Step 1: Add the dried chickpeas into a food processor and turn the speed to high. Grind the chickpeas until they break down and form a flour.

Step 2: Pass the chickpea flour through a sieve, catching all of the large chickpea pieces. Add the larger chickpea pieces back into the food processor and process again until the entire batch of chickpeas has formed a flour and can easily pass through the sieve. You can repeat this process as necessary.

    Health Benefits

Chickpea flour boasts a NUMBER of health benefits, especially when it’s homemade. Chickpea flour is high in fiber, protein, healthy fats, and carbs. It offers many vitamins and minerals that your body needs and has fewer calories than your typical flour.

    Recipe FAQs

Can you use chickpea flour for baking?

    • Yes! I highly recommend using chickpea flour for baking savory or sweet dishes.

Can I substitute all-purpose flour for an equal amount of chickpea flour?

    • Swapping all-purpose flour for chickpea flour will not be equal, or a 1 to 1 ratio. For every 1 cup of all-purpose flour, you will use about ¾ cup of chickpea flour.

Does chickpea flour change the taste of dishes when used?

    • When chickpea flour is cooked it will not change the taste of your baked goods or savory dishes.

    Expert Tips

    • Depending on the speed of your food processor, you may want to finish the final, small portion of the chickpea flour in a spice grinder, using small batches.
    • If your food processor is too large or not fast enough, the remaining ½ cup of chickpeas can be hard to break down. A spice grinder/coffee grinder is a good solution for this.
