What Is Fruit Compote Made With?

1 lb frozen berries (I used a Triple Berry Medley)

    2 tablespoon honey

    ½ tablespoon lemon juice

    How to Make Fruit Compote

Step 1 : In a medium pot, add the frozen berries, honey, and lemon juice. Stir until combined. Heat over medium-high heat for about 10 minutes, or until the berries begin to release juice and the liquid begins to boil.

    What is a compote?

The definition of compote is fruit preserved or cooked in syrup. Compote is made with fresh or dried fruits cooked on a low heat for a longer period of time so that some of the fruit pieces stay intact.

    Recipe Variations

You can use any fruit blend you desire for this recipe. You can also use lime juice instead of lemon juice if you prefer.

    What To Use Compote For?

I love foods that I can make and use for a number of things and compote is one of those foods. It can be used as a mix in/topper for yogurt, custard, or ice cream, brownies, cheesecake, pound cake, waffles, pancakes, or french toast.

Fruit compote is also so delicious spread on top of a cracker along with your favorite cheese.

    FAQs

    Why is it called compote?

Compote is simply a mixture of something. So because this recipe is a mixture of fruit, honey, and lemon juice the culinary world refers to it as fruit compote.

Is compote the same thing as puree?

Not exactly. Fruit compote is cooked on low heat for a longer period of time so that some of the fruit pieces stay intact. Purees are cooked so that everything liquifies.

    How long does compote last?

Compote doesn't have as much sugar or preservatives as jelly or jam so it does not last as long. It will stay good in the fridge for about 2 weeks or in the freezer for up to 3 months.

    Optional Add-ins

    • You can use fresh fruit if you’d prefer. Fresh berries and stone fruits are good options.
    • You can replace the honey with maple syrup or granulated sugar for a vegan option.
    • If you want to add some spice to your compote use cinnamon, cloves, ginger, or turmeric.

    Expert Tips & Tricks

    • You may only have to heat the fruit for 5 minutes before it releases juice.
    • Use fresh lemon juice if possible.
    • If you like a sweeter compote, you can always add more sugar after the compote has finished cooking

    Storage Instructions

Store fruit compote in the fridge in an airtight container for up to 2 weeks. You can also freeze your compote for up to 3 months.
